Twenty-one

AT RIVERDALE the matron called Kate to her office and told her that the physiotherapy job was hers. In two weeks’ time she’d be sent on an intensive training course in London, and then she’d be on probation for one month. If her work proved satisfactory, the job would become permanent at ninepence an hour.

When she told Dr. Elliott, he was pleased. He said physiotherapy was important work; the kind of work that women, in his opinion, were better at than men.

“If you like,” he said, “until they send you to London, you can help out in my front room. Margaret will show you the ropes and it’ll free her for other duties. Our cases are nothing compared to Thomas’s pathology, but they’ll help you get past him. All right? I’ll clear it with Matron.”

She asked him about her hands, her fingernails, and he looked at them.

“Talk to Margaret. She sees worse here. She’ll probably suggest soaking your hands in warm turpentine and scrubbing gently with a soft brush. Soak and scrub repeatedly. It’ll dissolve off. Then wash well, and when your hands are dry put on some lotion and work it in. Margaret will help you.”
